For nearly a century, WHOI has been one of the best known and most trusted names in ocean science and exploration. Our scientists and engineers have played a part in many of the discoveries that form the modern understanding of the ocean and how it interacts with other parts of the planet, including human society.
Worldwide marine meteorological and oceanographic communities are working in partnership under the umbrella of the WMO-IOC Joint Technical Commission for Oceanography and Marine Meteorology, in order to respond to interdisciplinary requirements for met/ocean observations, data management and service products.
The GLOBEC programme officially ran from 1999-2009. The aim was to advance our understanding of the structure and functioning of the global ocean ecosystem, its major subsystems, and its response to physical forcing so that a capability can be developed to forecast the responses of the marine ecosystem to global change.
